Wordless Wednesday

The Sisters.....

Yes, we really are sisters and great friends.  We both feel so blessed to have each other and can't imagine how different our lives would be if one of us wasn't in it.

We were raised in a very small town (less than 2500 people) in Kansas.  Our mom was a stay-at-home mom.  She made all our clothes for us from the time we were born until we went off to college and beyond.  She was a very talented seamstress.  Often mom would take us to a clothing store where we would try on clothes (hoping that THIS time we could buy an outfit and take it home) only to have her say, "I can make that!".  So, off we would go to the fabric store.  AND, she hardly ever used a pattern.  She would just cut out her own pattern using newspaper!  Did I mention that she was talented?

This was a good thing and not a good thing for us sisters.  Oh, how we l-o-n-g-e-d for a store bought outfit!  But, she she did teach us how to sew, along with us learning from 4-H, and of course, home ec. 

In the 1980's, we sisters did a lot of counted cross stitch together.  That was quite the craze and we were caught up, often calling each other about a project or just shopping together to get the right pattern.

Our quilting adventure began in 1991.  That is when the first quilting class took place and once again, we were hooked.  Now our conversations revolved around quilting.  Those cross stitch books found their way to the store room and in came the quilting supplies.  We haven't looked back since.

When our kids were in grade school, they went to church camp together in Colorado.  We would get together while the kids were gone and sew non-stop until we got a whole top done.  Those were wonderful times and we made some wonderful quilts.  We would begin by picking out a pattern, then shop for the fabric.  We each made a quilt, but we made the same quilt.  Usually they were for one of our kids.  So one of the first quilts we made was a Martha Washington Star quilt in red, cream and navy.  This was for my youngest child and my sisters oldest child.  After we made each of our kids (3 kids each) a bed quilt, we started making them for ourselves....just because!

                                              
This is one of our first quilts we made for ourselves.  It still hangs in our homes today and I just love it.  It is a "calendar" quilt with each block representing a month of the year.

Now that our kids are all grown and some with kids of their own, we now find ourselves saying, "What can we make for our grand kids?"   Another chapter has begun in our lives and we think it is the best one yet!

***A note about our husbands...
We think we have the best husbands!  They encourage us sisters to spend time together quilting and/or traveling.  And they never complain when we are gone from them for a week or two at a time and they have to fend for themselves.  What two women could ask for more?

When the husbands are busy......the sisters hibernate in their sewing rooms!!!

It has been a weekend of quilting, quilting, quilting!!! Along with our fun hobby are lots of emails and phone calls back and forth..... "What are you working on now?" "Hey, any ideas how I should make this?" "Wish you were here to see this!" "Send me a picture!!" In between the quilting questions we discuss our kids, our precious grandchildren, (you will meet them later) and what all we are doing next week. Do you make daily or weekly phone calls to your sister?

We have been working on our Calendar of Houses Bee blocks. We will post them after we have mailed them off to their owners!! It's nice to have someone to help with ideas, do some critiquing, and to tell you that you did an awesome job and that it couldn't be any better!! Thanks sis!!

The weekend is over and it is back to all the activities of the week! Yea for us, one of the activities will be to do some more quilting, making more phone calls, and always to keep encouraging.

Sisters weekend!

We had a very fun time in Colby, Kansas a few weekends ago.  Since Jodi lives in Colorado and Jackie lives in Kansas, we decided to meet half way and have a quilting weekend.  We didn't actually quilt, but we did sew.  We both have been wanting to make quiet books for our grandchildren and dreaded the idea of making them by ourselves.  So, we made them (or part of them) together.  Neither book is done yet.  We might need another long weekend away from our hubbies to get them finished!
